Where's My Head At?

The honest answer is, I don't know. Seriously, you know you're far gone when you think you got everything done at night then, in the morning, you're moseying along and suddenly you remember, "Oh, right, I have a blog." I'm sorry, my lovelies/minions/Merry Men. Somehow, I gapped on this sight. My abject apologies.

In the thread of things I somehow gapped out, I received a blog award a while ago and neglected to pay it forward. That shall be remedied now.

I received the Irresistible Blogger Award from the lovely Lola Sharp.

Some General Randomness

First off, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind every citizen of the US who is of age and eligible to register to vote. If you won't be in your area on election day, register to vote absentee. Just to remember, we live in what's pretty much a democracy. (Sort of a democracy. Sort of a republic. Trust me, I've heard of people expound on this. I won't.) Remember, as Shaw said, “Democracy is a device that insures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.” Or, more to the point, to quote H.L. Mencken, "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard." So, let's vote people. Register, and vote!

For the award, I'm supposed to post 7 true things about myself. I hope they amuse you.

1) The Other One and I once convinced the younger brother of a close friend that we had a triplet named Elizabeth. We took turns pretending to be Elizabeth, ourselves, and each other, which I'm sure didn't make it any easier for him to figure us out. We kept the charade going for a month and a half until he was about to introduce me to other people as Elizabeth. Then we decided it might be going a tad far.

2) Once, in my younger days, I put a friend in a locker and helped put some other people in lockers as well. Including The Other One. And my best friend. And school librarian. Twice. And the vice principle. (It's not as heinous as it sounds, I promise. It was part of a tradition. And I hopped into a locker myself while this was all going on. What can I say, we geeks at my Junior High were a little strange.)

3) I discovered earlier this month through a link someone sent The Other One online that we might secretly be Canadian citizens. I don't know for sure, because that would involve forms and documents and getting the government to look into things, but that greatly amuses me.

4) I have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the first four Harry Potter books (did you know the first word Harry actually says in the series is 'Nearly'? yeah, I'm that geeky) and the first four seasons of The West Wing. And I'm getting there with the first four seasons of Bones. (Okay, what is it with me and the number four?)

5) I honestly do not remember the last time I got more than two inches cut off my hair. I have a feeling it was more than 3.5 years ago but less than 6, but any more specific time approximation alludes me. This fact does not prevent people from asking me for that information on a semi-regular basis.

6) I don't watch movies. I mean, I go to the cinema with my family when we're all together or with friends if we all have spare time, but left to my own devices, I tend not to seek movies out. I do not have a Top 250 movies list. I couldn't name 250 movies if someone paid me to.

7) On the other hand, if someone paid me to, I could recite all 50 US states in under 5 minutes. In alphabetical order. Yep, I've got skills.

Today, I'd like to thank the charming Karen Gowen for giving me the Beautiful Blogger Award. Thanks. You're much too kind. :)

Now, I'm not entirely clear what the rules are, but I believe I'm supposed to post seven interesting things about my life. Not sure how easy that'll be, but I'll give it a go.

1) I have a twin. Okay, you probably already knew that (I call her The Other One when I mention her on the blog). Still, I consider it interesting, and it's what I've got.

2) I have a thing about languages. I like being able to speak them, and I definitely geek out about grammar, implicit meanings, that sort of thing. We've heard me geek out about Chinese.

3) I aspire to one day read the all the plays of William Shakespeare. The Other One has, but I have not, and I feel like a somewhat deficit English-lit-geek if I haven't read more, so I plan to get right on that soon. Besides, Shakespeare's my homeboy. ;)

4) Once, in my younger days, I went to Chile with my parents. Whilst going through customs, I set my purse on the floor and forgot it. I didn't realize until we'd passed through. So, without my passport, any knowledge of Spanish, or a word to my parents, I sprinted back through customs to get my purse and then ran back to my parents. No one stopped me, but my parents were less than pleased.

5) My mother's side of the family are Canadians, so I've been there a lot. I'd characterize Canada as the much more chill version of the US. I love America. But Canada will always have a special place in my heart, and near as I can tell, it is more chill.

6) On the Canada side of things, I have, at least once, convinced people of all the following things: Canada used to use the 25 hour clock but recently switched to 24 hours, which makes my life easier; in Canada, on July 1st, we all come together as a nation to heard beavers into the Plain Provinces, where we club them on the head, and eat them; in Canada, people get around on bobsleds, and the cars you see people in are borrowed from the government to go south of the border.

7) Despite never having worked as an actor professionally, I have appeared on stage in three states, and I hold membership in the International Thespian Society.

Thanks and Things

The charming Nicole Ducleroir was kind enough to give me the Blogger Buddie Award. (Thank you, again. It's very sweet.) If you've never been, you should run over and check her blog out.

I'm not sure how this award usually works, so I'm going to follow Nicole by stating five real things about my life.

1) When I'm on the computer, I put on movies I've already seen to play behind whatever I'm doing. I'm into background noise. I blame the schools I went to as a kid. Those places were never silent. (In the background right now -- War Inc.)

2) I'm keeping track of all the books I read this year for my goal of 50 books this year. I spend so much time reading articles or excerpted chapters that I don't feel like I read real books anymore. (The last book on the list -- Gang Leader for a Day.)

3) Right next to my feet is a post office box containing my To Read books. Currently, it's filling me with guilt, because I'm not getting through it as quickly as I would have hoped. (Thickest book in the box: The Crimson Petal and the White which I picked up from my hometown Used Book and Record Exchange.)

4) The other thing guilting me at the moment is my white-on board above my desk, which bears, at the moment, a completely inaccurate schedule, among other things. I swear I'm going to update that thing when I finish typing this post. I swear. (The only thing likely to stay: the quote from Douglas Adams "Don't Panic" on the top in purple).

5) What should I probably do when I finish typing this post? Read more of Great Expectations. And I will definitely do that, but I have a feeling I'm going to need another mug of tea before curling up with that. (How long will I get in Great Expectations before it sends me into another nap: hopefully, hopefully I'll make it 20 pages. Not to say I think this isn't a great book, because it's actually quite good, but sometimes it puts me to sleep.)
